World Women Work is a not-for-profit, 501 (c) 3 organization that buys and sells beautiful things made by women (and some men) from economically and environmentally challenged countries around the world. Our mission is twofold: to support women by buying and reselling their products, and to donate the profits to conservation and education programs that directly benefit both women and the environment.
World Women Work was started in 1998 by Singer Rankin, an American woman who has always had a strong bond with wild places and animals, and a strong desire to conserve them. She has also been increasingly concerned by the globalization– and resultant homogenization– of indigenous cultures and their crafts. Through her extensive travels, she has come into contact with many of these places and peoples working to preserve both their cultures and their ancestral lands. She observed firsthand the crucial yet often unacknowledged role that women play in conservation and in the preservation of artisanal traditions, and became determined to assist them in their efforts. Thus World
Women Work was born.
